Virtual Journal Club

Introduction

Welcome to the Virtual Journal Club.  If you would like to continue to receive this information on a monthly basis and are not a member of the SMGO, MGCS, a gyn oncology fellow or on staff at MSKCC please email: VJC@smgo.org with "subscribe" in the subject line type or click here.  You will then continue to receive one issue every month.  If you would like to unsubscribe and not receive any further issues please send E-mail to the same address with “unsubscribe” in the subject line or click here.  This service is being provided free of charge.  Please forward this to anyone who may be interested, as we don’t have everyone's E-mail address on file.  This issue and future issues will be posted on our website at: www.smgo.org/VJC.htm.  Each month you will receive an E-mail informing you when the next issue of the Virtual Journal Club is available. We expect to post the previous month's articles by the 15th of each month.

So what is the Virtual Journal Club (VJC)?  While many practitioners are capable of reading/reviewing a few journals on a regular basis, it is difficult to review a large number of journals every month.  We have chosen the ten journals that we feel have the most relevant information for the practicing gynecologic oncologist.  All issues of these journals are reviewed each month by one of the clinical fellows at Memorial Hospital.  The articles that appear to be most relevant for the practicing gynecologic oncologist are selected for inclusion in the monthly issue of the VJC.  Each fellow composes a two to three sentence summary of the most salient points of the article.  We limit the maximum number of articles to three per journal per month.  Each issue of the VJC includes the full citation of the article (title, author, source), the two to three sentence summaries and a link to the abstract on the journal's home page.  If an article interests you based on the title or summary, simply click on the abstract link and you will be taken directly to the abstract on the journal's home page.  If you or your institution has a subscription to that journal, you will then be able to click on the PDF version of the article and read or print the full article.  While we have chosen articles we think will be of interest, you decide which abstracts and/or articles you want to read based upon your own interest.

The journals that are surveyed are New England Journal of Medicine, Journal of Clinical Oncology, Gynecologic Oncology, Cancer, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Lancet, Cancer Research, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Journal of the American Medical Association and American Journal of Surgical Pathology.  Since journals are reviewed each month, the current issue of the Virtual Journal Club includes relevant articles from the preceding month.  The participants in this program are the active clinical fellows at Memorial Hospital:  Christopher Awtrey, Sarah Ferguson, Alan Schlaerth, Destin Black, Margrit Juretzka and Eric Eisenhauer.  While this is intended to cover all articles that may be of interest, we cannot guarantee that certain articles will be overlooked as we only survey these ten journals and we limit the distribution to three articles per journal per month maximum.  I hope you find that this service helps to keep you up to date with the most current literature of relevance to the practicing gynecologic oncologist.  If you have any suggestions, would like to see additional journals included, have comments, questions or complaints please E-mail us at: VJC@smgo.org or click here.

Sincerely,

Douglas A. Levine
